Germany’s meticulously creative population has made major contributions to international culture, particularly during the 18th century when the Saxon courts at Weimar and Dresden attracted some of the greatest minds of Europe. With such rich traditions to fall back on, inspiration has seldom been in short supply for the new generations of German artists, despite the upheavals of the country’s recent history.

The scope of German architecture is so extraordinary you could make an entire trip based solely on the subject. The first great wave of buildings came with the Romanesque period (800–1200), examples of which include Trier Cathedral, the churches of Cologne and the chapel of Charlemagne’s palace in Aachen.

The Gothic style (1200–1500) is best viewed at Freiburg’s Münster cathedral, Cologne’s Dom (cathedral) and the Marienkirche in Lübeck. Red-brick Gothic structures are common in the north of Germany, with buildings such as Schwerin’s Dom and Stralsund’s Nikolaikirche.

For classic baroque, Balthasar Neumann’s superb Residenz in Würzburg, the magnificent cathedral in Passau and the many classics of Dresden’s old centre are must-sees. The neoclassical period of the 19th century was led by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, whose name crops up all over Germany.

In 1919, Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus movement in an attempt to meld theoretical concerns of architecture with the practical problems faced by artists and craftspeople. The Bauhaus flourished in Dessau-Rosslau, but with the ascent of the Nazis, Gropius left Germany for Harvard University.

Albert Speer was Hitler’s favourite architect, known for his pompous neoclassical buildings and grand plans to change the face of Berlin. Most of his epic works ended up not being built or were flattened by WWII.

Frankfurt shows Germany’s take on the modern high-rise. For a glimpse of the future of German architecture, head to Potsdamer Platz, Leipziger Platz and the government area north of the Reichstag in Berlin, which are all glitzy swathes of glass, concrete and chrome.

The Renaissance came late to Germany and its artists, but flourished once it took hold, replacing the predominant Gothic style. The draughtsman Albrecht Dürer of Nuremberg was one of the world’s finest portraitists, as was the prolific Lucas Cranach the Elder, who worked in Wittenberg for more than 45 years.

The baroque period brought great sculpture, including works by Andreas Schlüter in Berlin; while romanticism produced some of Germany’s most famous paintings, best exemplified by Caspar David Friedrich and Otto Runge.

At the turn of the 20th century, expressionism established itself with great names such as Swiss-born Paul Klee and the Russian-born painter Wassily Kandinsky, who were also associated with the Bauhaus design school.

By the 1920s, art had become more radical and political, with artists such as George Grosz, Otto Dix and Max Ernst exploring the new concepts of Dada and surrealism. Käthe Kollwitz is one of the era’s few major female artists, known for her social-realist drawings.

The only works encouraged by the Nazis were the epic style of propaganda by artists such as Mjölnir; nonconforming artists such as sculptor Ernst Barlach and painter Emil Nolde were declared ‘degenerate’ and their pieces destroyed or appropriated for secret private collections.

Every year, many tourists decide to explore the cultural delights of Turkey. Walks are a fantastic way to see all that the country has to offer, taking you through ancient ruins and bustling towns and along spectacular coastlines. Wherever your walk takes you, there are a few cultural experiences that you simply cannot help but encounter during your time in the country.

Here are three of the best, which will provide you with experiences you’ll be recounting to your friends back home for weeks to come.

Turkish Baths (Hamams)

Turkish baths, or hamams as they are known locally, are found all over Turkey. Walks are a great way to see the country, but they can leave you tired and in need of some rejuvenation. So what better way to get over your stiff joints than by a trip to a Turkish bath?

In the hamam you can relax in the warm, steamy rooms and you can even experience a number of different massages. These can include a foam massage, an exfoliating massage and a luxurious oil massage. Hamams are part of the daily routine for many locals, and you may well find you get quite fond of them as well.

Don’t miss out on visiting a hamam when on a walking holiday in Turkey. Walks may be the best way to see the country, but it’s just as important to treat yourself to a bit of luxury every once in a while.

Turkish Kebabs

Turkey is, for some, the home of kebabs – and not the kind of kebabs that you are likely to find in some late night joint in a town centre in England. Turkish kebabs are of the highest quality, and will provide you with a culinary treat to remember long after your trip to Turkey. Walks that lead through any town or city are certain to take you past a restaurant or bar serving kebabs. And even if you don’t spot them, just follow your nose; the wonderful spicy aroma wafting out into the street will lead you straight to them.

Kebabs are different all over the country, with most regions having their own specific style. Whether a Si& #351; (shish) kebab, Adana kebab or the well known (but entirely different) Doner kebab, you are going to give your taste buds a treat when you try any kebab in Turkey.

Turkish Coffee House

In Turkey, walks will allow you to experience both the countryside and the bustling cities alike. But wherever you decide to go, you will never find yourself far from a coffee house selling strong Turkish coffee.

Coffee is an important part of daily life for Turkish people. It still plays a role in many rituals involving prayer and marriage, although not as much as it once did. It is made from a fine powder and the resulting drink is much stronger than you may be used to. Cardamom is sometimes added, and the distinctive taste is something you won’t forget in a hurry.

When you head to Turkey, walks of any type will lead you past one of these coffee houses sooner or later. And if you feel yourself getting tired during your walk, there is no better remedy than a shot of hot strong Turkish coffee to restore your energy levels.

Son Bou villas make the ideal choice of accommodation during your time in Menorca. Son Bou is a fantastic location which offers the visitor many things to see and do. But if you want to see more of Menorca, then there is one excellent way to get around that is cheap and enjoyable: walking.

Menorca seems to have been designed for walkers. What better way to see Son Bou and the surrounding area than on foot? Luckily, Menorca is well equipped for walkers as there are lots of easy trails to follow. So next time you are on a family holiday or a peaceful break staying in one of the delightful Son Bou villas, make sure you try it out.

Walking – The Cheap and Convenient Option

There is nothing easier than packing a picnic lunch for the day and heading off on a walking expedition when you stay in one of the Son Bou villas in Menorca. It won’t cost a thing, and you have the freedom to go where you like. The only limiting factor is how much energy you have, but a few days of walking will soon get you into good shape.

Son Bou villas are situated in the perfect location and there are plenty of walking trails to explore right outside your doorstep. They will take you along the beach and coastline or inland where you can enjoy the spectacular landscape in a way that many people never get to do. The best thing is you can enjoy it all without being stuck inside a car.

Where to Walk in Menorca?

There are few limits to where you can walk in Menorca when you stay in one of the many Son Bou villas on offer. You could choose to stick to the beach along the stunning coastline, or head inland to explore the countryside. When you are staying in Son Bou you will soon realise that other towns such as Mercadel and Alayor are within easy reach, so you could head to these places as well by car or bus and explore the surrounding areas on foot.

Things to Remember when Walking in Menorca

The most important thing to take into account when walking in Menorca is to use a good sunscreen! It can be all too easy to be admiring the beautiful views and forget that that lovely warm sun beating down on your shoulders can actually be strong. Before you leave your Son Bou Villas, slather it on and take some extra with you. Also don’t forget to pack a good supply of water in your picnic bag along with your lunch.

Get Out and See the Island

When you next head to Son Bou, villas provide the ideal accommodation. But although you might be tempted to stay near to your villa and not stray further than the beach, there is a whole island waiting for you if you decide to go out walking for the day. Try it out and see what you can discover!

Chile is considered to be among one of the better South American countries to visit. If ever anyone wanted to find and go to an interesting and fascinating South America location then this would have to be the one. With its world famous Andes volcanic mountains to its ancient forest tracts Chile represents a nature lover?s haven. This county captures many of nature?s best held treasures. The Torres del Paine is foremost of these places and is one of the many proofs towards the claims of fame for the country of Chile. The popular Lake District tends to hold most of the enchanting forest destinations that one can experience in this remote county.

Entry into the country of Chile is actually quite easy. If you happen to have a valid passport you can quickly ask for a tourist visa for immediate entry. The visa can be easily obtained provided you have complied with all the legal requirements for entry via the Chilean Embassy. Spanish is the primary language involved in this beautiful county thus it would be to your advantage to learn one or two of its more important words or phrases. Foreigners who can converse in the countries native language can always put a smile upon any of the local?s faces as well as a sparkle in their eyes.

While visiting in the country of Chile you can always rest assured that you can readily find a very good and reasonably priced place to stay for the trip. Most of the hotels and inns offer similar capabilities as those that you would find in America. The business hub of the capital city begins its operation at about 8 AM in the morning and close for a lunch break at noon. Some shops and businesses will then reopen at about 3 PM or 4 PM and will eventually end its day at around 8 or 9 PM in the evening. Finding a nice place to sit down and enjoy an evening meal with an abundance of fine dining is always an easy task in Chile as tasty food is considered a valuable asset. A 10 percent tip is usually required in all the popular restaurants within the country.

If you happen to be a fan of nature then you would certainly enjoy the chance to experience a different kind of nature trip where you can find a relaxing vacation with a chance to get in touch with the natural sceneries that are everywhere in Chile.

Planning a holiday walking in Greece? Well take that calendar off your wall and plan your trekking trip around these fantastic festivals. There’s a little something for everything, so come on over to Samos and learn to party like a local.

Dance on Taverna Tabletops

After walking in Greece the last thing that you’re going to want to do with those tired feet is dance on taverna tabletops, so we’ll leave that to the locals. You may want to take advantage of the lashings of local food and drink on offer during the feast day of the Virgin Mary, so plan your walking trip around 15th August to take advantage of the eating and merriment. No matter where you are in Samos, every village square and every local taverna will be hosting their own celebrations. Wine and music play a big part in the celebrations and most followers of the Greek Orthodox religion will have been fasting for a fortnight prior to this date.

Splash Around in Samos

When you’ve been walking in Greece on a warm summer afternoon, the idea of swimming in a nice cool lake can seem like heaven; but what about entering a swimming tournament? In the town of Pythagario, swimming tournaments are just a small part of the celebrations intended to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Mikali. The anniversary takes place on August 6th and if you don’t like the idea of competing against an Olympian in the swimming races, you can simply watch the local children dance a traditional Samoan dance, called the ‘Sirtos’, in their local costume. Religion plays a big part in the anniversary celebrations, but the sermons are all in Greek so you may want to give them a miss. Foodies will be delighted to know that the Battle of Mikali has its own designated dish; giorti. Giorti is made with minced lamb, grains and paprika and doesn’t look dissimilar to porridge. However, giorti is a lot tastier, and will definitely fill you up after a long day walking in Greece.

Feast with Fisherman

By now you should have spotted a distinct formula to a Greek festival; dancing, eating and wine. If you head to Pythagario in June during the Feast of the Fisherman you’ll be delighted to find that the food and wine are free. The food consists of fresh fish delivered by the local fishermen and is organised by the local council. The festival wouldn’t be complete without dancing and this goes on throughout the night. If you’re planning to continue walking in Greece the next morning, you may want to rest your feet earlier on in the evening so that you are good to go.

Party for Panagia Vrondiani

Remember giorti? Well it makes another festival appearance on the 6th and 7th of August. In fact, anyone who plans a trip walking in Greece during the first week of August may find themselves in the midst of a three day party. Straight after the celebrations commemorating the Battle of Mikali end, the feast day of Panagia Vrondiani begins. Dancing in the tavernas, followed by local wine and giorti are very much the flavour of the next two days. Walking during the day and feasting with the locals at night? It certainly sounds like the perfect holiday combination to us.
