In the country of Germany you will find the city of Chemnitz. It is the third largest city in the Free State of Saxony. From 1953 to 1990 this city was known by the name of Karl Marx Stadt. Chemnitz is situated in the northern foothills of the Ore Mountains and it is an independent city which does not belong to any county or seat of the government region.

The city of Chemnitz was named after the River Chemnitz which is a small tributary of the Zwickauer Mulde. In the Czech language this city is known as Saská Kamenice. The city’s name which came from the Sorbian language means “stony brook”. In the early days of Chemnitz it was a settlement called Kamiennica which was the home of an early Slavic tribe. The first documented use of the city was in 1143 at the site of a Benedictine monastery where a settlement began to slow emerge. About 1170 Fredrick I, the Holy Roman Emperor granted Chemnitz the rights of an Imperial city. During the medieval times the city became a centre for textile production and trade.

Today you will see a modern city which provides ample sights, activities and all the facilities that a tourist will need to have an enjoyable time in Chemnitz. While there are many places that you can look at while you are in this city you may want to plan your visit first. From the many sights you may enjoy seeing a petrified forest which exists in the courtyard of Kulturkaufhaus Tietz. This petrified forest is one of the very few forests that are in existence. The forest has been found to date back several million years.

Besides that of the petrified forest you can visit the Museum Gunzenhauser which was formerly a bank. This museum of Chemnitz has a wonderful collection of modern art. These art works number about 2,500 pieces. You will also find other art works by famous painters like Karl Schmidt Rottluff and Otto Dix to name but a few. The owner of this museum has donated the collection to the museum so that visitors here can appreciate the beauty and skill which was needed to create these masterpieces. Once you have finished looking at the art gallery you may wish to relax in the municipal garden of Chemnitz. This garden is called the Botanischer Garten Chemnitz.

You could also think about visiting a non profit garden which specializes in artic and alpine plants. This garden is the Arktisch Alpiner Garten der Walter Meusel Stiftung. Here you will be able to see some fine examples of plants and flowering plants which can exist in alpine and artic temperatures. As you se these plants you will be able to marvel at their beauty and hardiness. Once you have finished looking at these gardens you should take some time to plan where you will be going next.
